What works in humanitarian aid?

1/26/2026

In a world where humanitarian needs are increasing and donors are increasingly withdrawing, what works to ease suffering?

In this report below from David Miliband of International Rescue Committee, there are some great insights about the innovation needed in the humanitarian sector. The article states:

💡 "We know what works: cash assistance, simplified malnutrition treatment, immunization and anticipatory climate action are consistently cost-effective and transformative. Our challenge is how to focus resources on these solutions which we know are effective."

Baal Dan Charities has been running for 20 years - focused on efficiency and grassroots programs at a small-scale that deliver aid directly to children that are in need.

💡 We are funding simplified malnutrition treatment for vulnerable children in Ethiopia, South Africa, India and Nepal. And we track every dollar and impact reporting transparently, while cutting out administrative expenses and bloat.

With over 240 million people requiring humanitarian aid in the next year, does our work make a difference when the needs and scale is so great?

As Mother Teresa said; "We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop."

💫 Please give to Baal Dan - every dollar makes a real difference for children in need and every donation is valued no matter the amount.

We live in a world where technological progress is speeding up, yet political and humanitarian safeguards are deteriorating even faster. Nearly 240 million people will require humanitarian aid in 2026, yet global funding has fallen by more than half. The challenge now is to deliver more protection with fewer resources and under worse conditions. Yet while the situation is dire, it is not hopeless.
We can build a humanitarian model that is smarter, faster and more efficient.
Here’s how. https://lnkd.in/ejWRT-Eq

We need more monthly donors!

A monthly contribution brings in the stability of fundraising we need. As a small charity most of our giving is seasonal but if we can increase our monthly recurring donors, we will be able to have a pool of funds for children in need throughout the year. Please share this message with your family and friends to encourage others to join in on monthly giving - every dollar makes an impact.

Thank you Sir Mark Tully for being the "voice of India"

I wanted to pay my deep respects to Sir Mark Tully, the legendary “voice of India,” whose passing is a profound loss. I had the great honor of meeting him in 2011, when he opened the school I built in Turkahan, India through a grant for Project Mala. It remains one of the most meaningful moments of my life.

I deeply admired Sir Mark Tully, not only for his extraordinary journalism, but for the authenticity, curiosity, and humanity he brought to every story he told. When I shared with him that I, too, had a degree in Journalism and asked his advice for my work with Baal Dan, he told me simply: keep telling the stories of the children you help. It was such a humble piece of wisdom, yet it has stayed with me and guided me ever since.

I will always remember his warmth, his grace, and the way he used his voice to illuminate the lives of others. His legacy lives on in the countless stories he told and in all of us who continue the work of giving voice to those who need it most.

Celebrating 20 Years of Baal Dan with a Story for Little Heroes by Sol Landerman

Last year marked a very special milestone--20 years since I founded Baal Dan Charities, inspired by the belief that even the smallest act of kindness can make a profound difference in a child’s life.

To honor this journey, we created a short film that captures the magic, courage, and compassion at the heart of Baal Dan.

“The Little Hero” is a gentle, enchanting story brought to life by the extraordinary storyteller, artist, and actor Sol Landerman. His narration invites children into a world where empathy becomes heroism and where small hearts can create big change.

This film is a gift to all the little ones and the little heroes in your life.

Happy New Year!

It is easy to make giving part of your resolutions in 2026. You can make a one-time donation to start off this year or set up a recurring monthly donation you can set up one time for the rest of the year.

You can also check if your company offers employee paycheck deduction and company matching.

We have big goals ahead this year - from continuing to support our little ones at orphanages in India, providing daily food and supplies for programs for children with special needs in Nepal and South Africa and hopefully extending our food rations program in Ethiopia! With your help we can all bring a smile and hope to children in need!

Wishing you blessings, joy and peace this coming year!
