Why are we focusing so much on Ethiopia and hunger?
I can’t forget the images of the famine in Ethiopia I saw as a young girl in the 1980s. I also can’t forget my travels across Ethiopia when I was a Consultant for World Vision International and the poverty and need I saw that rarely gets any mainstream news coverage. Conflict and climate change continue to impact the lives of innocent children – and I can’t look away. With our amazing partner ASDEPO – who have the expertise on the ground – we can make a difference to children in need through rations of food and essential supplies that keep children out of dangerously low body weight. In some cases, much more is spent on salaries, fundraising and other costs. Since Baal Dan was founded in 2006, our admin costs have been consistently less than 2.5% and in 2024 we only spent 1.1% on administrative costs. How is that possible?
We keep our costs low by focusing on 3 things: 1. We leverage volunteers, programs and partners as much as possible to ensure that admin costs are kept to a minimum. 2. We focus on maintaining a lean and agile operating model - prioritizing impact for the children and partners we fund. 3. We subsidize costs where possible and keep a watchful eye on expenses and tracking. Our model has ensured that we have kept costs low and while we are a relatively small nonprofit - we have focused on having as much direct and efficient impact for children in need as possible - sometimes at the expense of scale - but never at the expense of the children. Thanks to a generous grant from the Shah Family, a biogas unit is being installed at the new Child Haven Orphanage campus just outside of Hyderabad, India. This is why we focus on needs that will make a difference – even if they are unseen. Construction has begun! Stay tuned for updates! During the conference, the amazing John Zarrella from Research Results and Rob Kaiser at PSB decided to start a matching fund to help raise funds for Baal Dan! In less than 3 days, we were able to raise $5,000 to get a match of $5,000 that will enable more than 300 children to have life-saving food through our partnership with ASDEPO! In a year where fundraising has been hard so this was a much-needed injection of funds for our little ones! Thank you to everyone who donated and helped us meet our deadline! Thank you to Research Results and PSB for your generous match! And please help further support Baal Dan Charities by following us on LinkedIn |
